People from all over the world are invited to send us a rock from your local area to be combined together in a Earth Master Sample.<\/p>\n

What is Earth Master Sample?<\/h2>\n

To celebrate the theme of World Space Week 2013 \u2013 Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth \u2013 people all over the world are being invited to submit a fist-sized rock from their local area to form part of an \u2018Earth Master Sample\u2019.<\/p>\n

A fragment from each of the resulting collection of rocks will be ground to a powder, mixed together with a Mars meteorite, and melted down by leading crystal producer, Swarovski, who will craft a unique set of 100 crystals to commemorate the event. The crystals, which will be unveiled by Swarovski at the Yuri\u2019s Night celebrations on 12 April 2014, will be presented to representatives of space agencies, policy makers and thought leaders around the world.<\/p>\n

What’s the story?<\/h2>\n

By participating in the Earth Master Sample Campaign, you are showing your support for understanding more about our Solar System through the study of Earth analog sites and for future Mars sample return missions that will help us decode the history of the Red Planet.<\/p>\n

Crystals will be presented to heads of Space Agencies, policy makers and thought-leaders, as a symbol of the importance of these goals for space exploration and for humanity.<\/p>\n

How do I participate?<\/h2>\n

Follow the seven simple steps below to collect your rock and send it for inclusion in the Earth Master Sample.<\/p>\n

Take a picture<\/strong> of the sample site and a scale (e.g. classmate, family member etc\u2026) from at least 10m distance<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Take a close-up<\/strong> picture with a scale (e.g. hammer, pen, etc)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Note your geographical location<\/strong> (e.g. 31\u00b022.363 N 4\u00b04.357 W): to find these, type the address (or find the location on Google Maps), right click on the location and click ‘What’s here?’. The coordinates will display in the search bar (south and west coordinates begin with a – sign)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Take a fist-sized rock sample<\/strong>. (No soil samples, no sand please).<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Put the sample into a clean plastic bag<\/strong>.
\nIMPORTANT:<\/strong> Label the sampling bag with: date (DD\/MM\/YY) + Ttme (HH:MM) + geographical coordinates. (e.g. 17AUG13 17:22, 47.234 N \/ 11.234 E)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Send an email to edu@worldspaceweek.org<\/strong> listing the geographical location, the two pictures and the contact coordinates of a contact person.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
