It’s summer time again, which means that the OeWF is hosting interns at the suitlab in Innsbruck. Today, we want to introduce Anna (or rather let her introduce herself), who has recently joined Ragnar and Drew to work on a caution and warning algorithm system for the Aouda spacesuit.<\/p>\n

\nUniversity of Otago, New Zealand (PG Cert Av Med);

Profession:\u00a0<\/strong>General Practitioner \/ Physician<\/p>\n

When I was studying at King\u2019s College London in 2015, we had an\u00a0educational visit at the European\u00a0Space Agency (ESA), Cologne,\u00a0Germany. Dr. Groemer came\u00a0down with his team to introduce\u00a0the space suit. We were invited to\u00a0join the team as a guest\u00a0researcher if we were interested.\u00a0My profound passion for\u00a0aerospace medicine had driven\u00a0me to approach Dr. Groemer to\u00a0express my interest to join them.<\/p>\n

I submitted my resume through\u00a0email and had a Skype interview\u00a0with Dr Groemer . The initial plan was to do it upon completion of my masters\u00a0degree, but there was no project going on during that time. After a fruitful\u00a0discussion, I finally decided to come back to Europe during summer 2016 to\u00a0join the research team.<\/p>\n

I was assigned to team up with Ragnar and Drew, Space and Health\u00a0Physiology master\u2019s degree\u00a0students from King\u2019s College\u00a0London. The assignment is to\u00a0develop a structure of Caution and Warning system for the space suit.\u00a0Ragnar has a Neuroscience\u00a0background whereas Drew worked\u00a0as a flight controller with NASA for\u00a0a year and has a Biomedical\u00a0Engineering background.<\/p>\n

The algorithm that we work on:<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are working on developing a Caution and Warning algorithm system that\u00a0will be implemented on the space suit. The system involves monitoring the\u00a0clinical parameters of the astronaut analog during simulation. The algorithm is\u00a0meant to assist the Biomedical Engineers (BME) and On Board Data\u00a0Handlers (OBDH) at the operations station to make decisions upon detecting\u00a0off-nominal situations. They involve monitoring the heart rate, temperature of\u00a0the suits, saturation of oxygen of the analog astronaut and carbon dioxide\u00a0level of the suits. The algorithm will be incorporated into a software system. It\u00a0is reckoned that the algorithm system will reduce the workload of the BME\u00a0and OBDH officers at the operations station, whilst increasing mission safety\u00a0during extra-vehicular activities.<\/p>\n

Highlight of living in Innsbruck:<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is not the first time I came to Europe, but this is the first time I came to\u00a0Innsbruck, Austria. The terrains of Alps mountains create breath-taking views\u00a0that one\u00a0would never get bored with. In addition, I also cherish the diversity of\u00a0cultural backgrounds as I get to meet with people from all walks of life at the\u00a0hostel where I am staying at.<\/p>\n

Thanks to my team, I had a little Eid celebration with them as I brought some\u00a0Malaysian cuisines for them to taste. Surprisingly, everyone enjoyed the\u00a0foods despite the spiciness as Malaysians are known for their spicy foods.\u00a0In a broader spectrum, I would like to express my gratitude to Dr Gernot and\u00a0the rest of the team for their hospitality and giving me the honour to make a\u00a0little contribution for the sake of mankind.<\/p>\n
