The Soyuz-TM-13 capsule with Commander Aleksandr Volkov, flight engineer Toktar Aubakirov and scientific cosmonaut Franz Viehb\u00f6ck on board departs from the launch pad in Baikonur. Two days later on October 4th 1991 at 08:40 CET, the capsule with the three cosmonauts docks at the Russian space station MIR.<\/p>\n<p>Franz Viehb\u00f6ck still has vivid memories of<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLooking outside the window of the space station MIR and the constant feeling of weightlessness. And all the technical details, of course. The launch, the re-entry into the atmosphere, the landing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_11647\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/motomir2.jpg\" class=\"fancybox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11647\" class=\" wp-image-11647\" src=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/motomir2-414x600.jpg\" alt=\"MOTOMIR Ergometer (c) Austromir.at\" width=\"250\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/motomir2.jpg 414w, https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/motomir2-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MOTOMIR Ergometer (c) Austromir.at<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 7-day stay at the space station MIR was characterized by <strong>15 scientific experiments<\/strong> from the fields of space medicine, physics and space technology. MOTOMIR, for example, not only helped train against the loss of muscle in weightlessness, but also examined, with extremely high precision and detail, the changes in human strength and speed.<\/p>\n<p>MIGMAS-A was the first installment of a station to analyze materials. The instrument diagnosed the changes in materials resulting from space corrosion. MIGMAS-A functioned without a problem until the controlled descent of MIR. An identical copy is featured in the AustroMir collection, maintained by the OeWF.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On October 10th 1991 at 05:12 CET, the space flight of Franz Viehb\u00f6ck ended with the landing of Soyuz TM-12 in the Kazakh Steppe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AustroMir 1, the official name of the mission, was a great success. Nonetheless, human spaceflight should take a backseat in Austria in the following years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/austro-mir-3-1.png\" class=\"fancybox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11642 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/austro-mir-3-1-600x600.png\" alt=\"25 Jahre Austromir\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/austro-mir-3-1-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/austro-mir-3-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/austro-mir-3-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/austro-mir-3-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/austro-mir-3-1.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>25 years later, OeWF board member Gernot Gr\u00f6mer summarizes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn Austria, we have a well-established field of analog research. With this, we can occupy a niche and contribute a little bit to Austria being in the front lines of human spaceflight.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To celebrate the AustroMir anniversary, Franz Viehb\u00f6ck invited his spaceflight colleagues from all around the world to the XXIX Planetary Congress in Vienna.
