During this test, the most advanced version of the Aouda.X spacesuit simulator and selected geophysical and life-science related experiments will be conducted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/icecave2.jpg\" class=\"fancybox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2154\" title=\"Dachstein cave\" src=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/icecave2-600x399.jpg\" alt=\"Dachstein giant ice cave\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/icecave2-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/icecave2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oewf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/icecave2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Purpose and Aim<\/h3>\n<p>Martian caves are considered one of the hotspots for astrobiology on the planet. Besides studying contamination vectors during human missions, the Austrian Space Forum is investigating operational issues related to (sub)surface operations in a Mars analog environment. After preparatory cave tests in lava caves in Mendig\/Germany and the Koppenbrueller cave\/Austria, we now increase the complexity and fidelity of the tests by including external experiments and expanding the support infrastructure like communication from within the cave to a rudimentary Mission Support Center. Preparing for a large field mission in February 2013 in Northern Africa, the Dachstein test is primarily meant to be<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a full systems check-out for the spacesuit simulator Aouda.X in its most recent upgrade,<\/li>\n<li>an opportunity for external teams to study equipment behaviour in an operational setting involving the simultaneous usage of different instruments with the option of a human-in-the-loop,<\/li>\n<li>a platform for performing ground validations and terrain tests for experiments, including rovers and study concepts of enhancing the situational awareness of remote support teams for planning purposes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Secondary aims include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>studying the Dachstein caves as a model region for Martian caves and life under extreme conditions,<\/li>\n<li>serving as a platform for media and outreach activities to enhance the visibility of planetary sciences<\/li>\n<li>enabling selected students of the Tripolar project to experience field research first hand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Location &amp; Setting<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The caves are settled within the UNESCO world heritage region of the Salzkammergut \/ Hallstatt in Austria (<a title=\"Dachstein cave coordinates on google map\" href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=47%C2%B028%E2%80%B232.5%E2%80%B3N+13%C2%B036%E2%80%B223.2%E2%80%B3E&amp;hl=de&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&amp;sspn=53.080379,114.169922&amp;vpsrc=0&amp;t=h&amp;z=16\" target=\"_blank\">47\u00b028\u203232.5\u2033N 13\u00b036\u203223.2\u2033E<\/a>), the next major city with airport is Salzburg. The geology of the Dachstein massif is dominated by the so-called Dachstein-Kalk (&#8220;Dachstein limestone&#8221;), dating from Triassic times. In common with other karstic areas, the Dachstein is permeated by a rich cave system, including some of the largest caves in Austria.
