We want to find errors in workflows and equipment so they aren’t discovered on Mars and cause problems there. The equipment should then be designed to suit the mission environment, procedures planned efficiently, and people properly trained for their tasks. In collaboration with the OeWF an observatory there was expanded to include a “Mars habitat”. This infrastructure has already been used during the World’s Biggest Analog Mission and in two OeWF-led school projects that were funded by the EU.

About the Analog Astronauts

The core of an OeWF’s Mars mission simulation, i.e. the dry run for future crewed flights to the Red Planet, are the analog astronauts from the Austrian Space Forum. They already have a wide range of qualifications – such as a university degree in medicine, engineering or natural sciences – speak several languages and are physically fit above average. In addition to operating the OeWF spacesuit prototype, your basic training at the OeWF also covers geology, planetology, astrobiology, media training, stress management, emergency medicine, survival training and an extensive fitness program.

The analog astronauts are used in technical tests and Mars mission simulations. To do this, in addition to their basic training, they undergo special training so that they can independently carry out the experiments of the international research partners.

During their missions outside the “Mars Habitat”, the analog astronauts wear the OeWF Mars suit prototype. This is like a “dress-on spaceship” and can reflect all the essential limitations of a real Mars spacesuit, such as weight, pressure counterforces or limited perception capabilities. A sophisticated human-machine interface, a system of sensors and self-developed software make the suit a virtual assistant to the astronaut. The 50kg prototype was developed to also optimize collaboration with other (robotic) components, such as a rover, while minimizing the risk of biological contamination of the planet under study.

The new OeWF Analog Astronauts

Olivia DRAYSON / UK
Originally from London, Olivia Drayson holds a BA in Physics from Balliol College, Oxford University and a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering from ISAE-Supaero in Toulouse, France.
