Team & Task(s)<\/strong> Michael Rampey was born in the USA\u00a0and presently lives in Switzerland. For the\u00a0MARS2013 Mission he is the leader of the\u00a0Remote Science Support (RSS) Team, which has\u00a0the overall responsibility at the MSC for the\u00a0operation and readiness of all experiments.\u00a0That includes the scientific experiment activity\u00a0planning and managing time, power and data\u00a0rate requests from multiple experiments in\u00a0cooperation with the Flightplan Team.<\/p>\n

Space & MARS2013<\/h2>\n

How did you first get in touch with the topic of space \/ astronomy \/ analog research?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have been interested in exploring outer space\u00a0since I was a child. After college, I learned to fly\u00a0high-performance jet aircraft for the USAF and\u00a0later obtained a Ph.D. in Volcanology from the\u00a0University of Cambridge, UK, in order to qualify\u00a0for the US space program. Unfortunately I was\u00a0not selected.<\/em><\/p>\n

When did you first hear about the Austrian Space Forum (OeWF)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was told about the OeWF by a colleague who\u00a0works at NASA.<\/em><\/p>\n

How did you learn about the \u201cMARS2013\u201d mission?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Same colleague.<\/em><\/p>\n

Why did you choose to participate?<\/strong><\/p>\n

At first I tried to submit a proposal for an\u00a0experiment. When that wasn\u2019t selected, Gernot\u00a0asked me to get involved with RSS.<\/em><\/p>\n

What was your first impression when you got involved with the OeWF team?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was and am quite impressed by the level of commitment and excitement that the team members bring to the table.<\/em><\/p>\n

What is your personal goal in this mission?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In general, I hope to help the team get its goals accomplished and specifically I hope to help Gernot to have a successful expedition. I would additionally like to see this experience lead to other opportunities with OeWF programs, especially with field simulations.<\/em><\/p>\n

Work, Life & Family<\/h2>\n

What I do for a living:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am a jet aircraft pilot instructor.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

A typical day in my life looks like this:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I travel to Paris and teach pilots how to fly the\u00a0Falcon 2000 EX aircraft.<\/em><\/p>\n

This is how I spend my spare time:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I work on volcanology science research projects\u00a0with colleagues in the UK and USA. Currently,\u00a0I am particularly busy with a couple of Mars\u00a0volcano projects.<\/em><\/p>\n

Family status:<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are a small family of three. My son, who is\u00a010, would like to fly airplanes once he has grown\u00a0up.<\/em><\/p>\n

How my friends would describe me:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Busy.<\/em><\/p>\n

Me, Myself & I<\/h2>\n

These things are precious to me:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Time. My family\/relatives.<\/em><\/p>\n

For this I would do almost anything:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Travel to outer space.<\/em><\/p>\n

Something that once changed my life:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lots of things have changed my life: learning to\u00a0fly, learning to do geology in Ethiopia, going\u00a0on expeditions to Antarctica, and climbing in the\u00a0Alps. Almost anything you do with your\u00a0whole heart will change your life.<\/em><\/p>\n

What is the most unusual \/ challenging \/ exciting \/ scary \/ funny thing you ever experienced?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Flying at the top of the atmosphere in a high-altitude military jet, was, I suppose, the most\u00a0exciting thing I have ever done. Exploring\u00a0Antarctica on two missions for the ANSMET\u00a0program was about the most unusual and also\u00a0satisfying thing I have ever done.<\/em><\/p>\n

Goal(s) & Motto<\/h2>\n

Something I would love to learn or to achieve:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I would like to be the first man to set foot on\u00a0Mars.<\/em><\/p>\n
