Throughout World Space Week (WSW) 2013, we will be having guest blogs by some of our participating partners in the ‘Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth’ campaign.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"alejandro_catala\"<\/a>Alejandro Catal\u00e1 Esp\u00ed will be giving WSW 2103 a special tour of the Mars Simulation Chamber<\/a> in the laboratories of the\u00a0Centro de Astrobiolog\u00eda (CAB-INTA) in Spain today\u00a0<\/strong>(5th October) and on Thursday 10 October<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I am a PhD student at an Associated Unit between the University of Valladolid (UVa) and the Centro Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas (CSIC), dependent from the Centro de Astrobiolog\u00eda (CAB-INTA) in Spain. I am doing my thesis in the context of the development of the Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) which, in 2018, will fly to Mars as part of the scientific payload in the ESA’s ExoMars rover.<\/p>\n

My PhD focuses in the study of the effect on the samples that the laser of the RLS instrument produces under the environmental conditions at which they will be analyzed inside the ExoMars’s Analytical Laboratory Drawer (ALD). This will help, if needed, in the redefinition of the scientific requirements of the instrument to guarantee the best science we can perform on Mars. The design and making of a RLS-specific Mars Simulation Chamber is the first part of this study.<\/p>\n

Exploring Mars in the context of astrobiology is trying to find the answers to the questions “Are we alone in the Universe?”, “Where do we come from?”, “Are we Martians?”, “Is life a rare event or the inevitable consequence of the evolution of the Universe?”, and many others! Being part of a discipline that investigates at this level is very exciting and I am very proud of it.<\/p>\n

Participating in the World Space Week is the best way to transmit my passion to the public, trying to make them understand the importance of planetary exploration in particular and of science in general, for the advancement of human knowledge. I was proposed as a coordinator of a region of Spain and I managed to involve the Museum of Science in Valladolid and my own laboratory in this celebration.<\/p>\n

We are owners of our fate and science and technology are the best tools we have to understand the world around us to create a better future for us and for generations to come.<\/p>\n

Soy un estudiante de doctorado en una Unidad Asociada entre la Universidad de Valladolid (UVa) y el Centro Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas (CSIC), dependiente del Centro de Astrobiolog\u00eda (CAB-INTA) en Espa\u00f1a. Estoy haciendo mi tesis en el contexto del desarrollo del Espectr\u00f3metro Raman (RLS) que, en 2018, volar\u00e1 a Marte como parte de la carga cient\u00edfica dentro del rover ExoMars de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA).
\nMi tesis doctoral se centra en el estudio del efecto sobre las muestras que el l\u00e1ser del instrumento RLS produce bajo las condiciones ambientales a las cuales ser\u00e1n analizadas en el interior del Laboratorio Anal\u00edtico (ALD) de ExoMars. Esto ayudar\u00e1, si es necesario, en la redefinici\u00f3n de los requisitos cient\u00edficos del instrumento para garantizar la mejor ciencia que podamos realizar en Marte. El dise\u00f1o y construcci\u00f3n de una C\u00e1mara de Simulaci\u00f3n Marciana espec\u00edfica para RLS es la primera parte de este estudio.<\/p>\n

Explorar Marte en el contexto de la astrobiolog\u00eda es tratar de encontrar las respuestas a las preguntas: “\u00bfEstamos solos en el Universo?”, “\u00bfDe d\u00f3nde venimos?”, “\u00bfSomos marcianos?”, “\u00bfEs la vida un evento excepcional o la inevitable consecuencia de la evoluci\u00f3n del Universo?”, \u00a1y muchas otras!. Ser parte de una disciplina que investiga a este nivel es muy emocionante y estoy muy orgulloso de ello.
\nParticipar en la Semana Mundial del Espacio es la mejor forma de transmitir mi pasi\u00f3n al p\u00fablico, tratando de hacerle entender la importancia de la exploraci\u00f3n planetaria en particular y de la ciencia en general, para el avance del conocimiento humano. Fui propuesto como coordinador de una regi\u00f3n de Espa\u00f1a y consegu\u00ed involucrar al Museo de la Ciencia de Valladolid y a mi propio laboratorio en esta celebraci\u00f3n.
