You are the first contact of new OeWF members and interns, right?
Julia: It is important to us to welcome new members with appreciation; therefore everyone will be welcomed from the board at first. In addition, I am at one’s disposal when questions concerning the OeWF arise. I forward applications for internships and voluntary to the teams and conduct the first interview with potential candidates. This process is highly interesting, because I get to know so many diverse and motivated people.
The OeWF consists of an international team of which many are living all over the planet. How do you communicate?
Julia: This is where the Monday Mail comes to practice. In this document important insight news concerning projects, events, co-op partners and even job offers are bundled. I collect the input from the forum, board and team leads and then figure out how to put the information in a 2-weekly solid letter.
Ground Support is responsible for trouble-free procedures at the MSC in Innsbruck. Which requests do you receive?
Julia: Whenever needed, we are immediately there to solve problems, so we are kind of omnipresent and always informed about everything that is going on. This begins with the supervision of the analog astronaut training as well as the service and support teams and carries on at the operation of the MSC during the mission. In this department it is expected to act professionally and deal with time pressure. During the mission there is a lot to do in managing the people who enter and leave the facilities and we have to supply the teams when necessary.
Which properties should interested people bring with them when applying for your team?
Julia: Humour and showing an interest for the most diverse people are crucial to the OeWF as well as to be willing to tackle difficult tasks. It is important to get along with people and be open-minded as the Ground Support is the first contact for everyone who joins the OeWF.
