After the Mars simulation is before the Mars simulation, or to be more precise: the data collected from the AMADEE missions is the centrepiece of our scientific research. AMADEE is our flagship research programme and forms the framework concept for the development of hardware, workflows and scientific methods for future planetary surface missions by humans and robots.
At the beginning of April this year, the third Mars simulation of the AMADEE programme, the four-week Mars analog mission AMADEE-24, was successfully completed. The crew, consisting of six analog astronauts and supporting teams in Armenia and at the Mission Support Center in Vienna, mastered numerous challenging situations – including the unexpectedly rainy spring in the Ararat region – and thus ensured the success of the expedition. Over 200 scientists from 26 countries were involved with their equipment, robotic vehicles and experiments.
Over the course of the mission, 14 experiments were conducted in the fields of engineering, robotics, biotechnology, geosciences and humanities, giving the researchers a chance to collect data in a realistic environment rather than under laboratory conditions. A central aspect of our Mars simulations is data acquisition and storage in order to provide the scientists involved with the relevant information quickly and reliably. Thomas Krenn’s technology played a decisive role here: the company’s servers are used, among other things, to store the data collected during the simulation and make it available to the researchers in a very timely manner. The data from the AMADEE-24 mission are currently being analysed by experts in the respective fields and findings are being derived.
The planned AMADEE-24 Science Workshop at the end of the year in Salzburg will bring together experts from various scientific disciplines to discuss and evaluate the results of the Mars simulation. The possibilities and challenges of future astronautical Mars missions will also be discussed. The Science Workshop promises to be an exciting opportunity to learn more about the results of the AMADEE-24 simulation and gain an insight into the future of space exploration.
Our analog astronauts and team members from the supporting teams will also be on hand to share their first-hand experiences. Because as we said at the beginning: After the Mars simulation is before the Mars simulation.
Thomas-Krenn.AG’s technology will ensure that the data collected in Armenia will also be accessible to scientists worldwide via our data archive so that they can use it for their research. In addition to the data from the AMADEE programme, the OeWF Science Data Archive contains extensive data from our past research missions. This unique treasure trove of data is open to all researchers worldwide who want to use it to derive and process relevant research topics and answer scientific questions.
