7 Day 7: 7th February 2018
Yesterday our OeWF team participated in the 55th Session of the UN COPUOS Scientific and Technical Subcommittee that took place at the United Nations Vienna. We established a livelink to the AMADEE-18 Mars simulation site, and to the MSC, were our Field Commander Gernot Groemer, together with the Analog Astronauts in Oman, and Flight Control Team in Innsbruck, talked about the mission and how AMADEE-18 is a perfect example of international peaceful collaboration in space exploration. The panelists at UN were: Luca Foresta (OeWF analog astronaut), Rudolf Albrecht (OeWF liason of the Austrian delegation to the UN COPUOS), Saleh Al Shidhani (President of the Oman Astronomical Society), and Otto Koudelka (Austrian UN Delegation). 6 Day 6: 6th February 2018
During bridgehead phase visitors are allowed to visit the AMADEE-18 base camp and the Field Crew in the desert. We had some special VIP guests that enjoyed learning how the Aouda spacesuit simulator works by the hand of our Analog Astronaut Carmen Köhler. (c) OeWF (Florian Voggeneder)
5 Day 5: 5th February 2018
Aerial view of the Base Camp from the immensity of the Dhofar desert. Only sand and rocks surround it, and the nearest major city, Salalah, is very far away from the site. This enormous structure will be the Field Crew home for the following weeks. (c) OeWF (Florian Voggeneder)
4 Day 4: 4th February 2018
Sunset from our AMADEE-18 base camp in Dhofar desert in Oman. Preparation week is being very busy for the Field Crew preparing the base for the simulation, while adapting their bodies to the environmental conditions of the desert. (c) OeWF (Florian Voggeneder)
3 Day 3: 3rd February 2018
Our three Field Commanders Gernot Grömer, Joao Lousada, Sebastian Sams looking at the horizon, observing the magnificent desolation of the Dhofar desert in Oman. This will be their “home” for the next 28 days. Counting down the days to the start of the mission. (c) OeWF (Florian Voggeneder)
2 Day 2: 2nd February 2018
The field crew travelled to the simulation site where they discovered how difficult is to drive in the desert! It was also not easy for the trucks carrying our AMADEE-18 containers filled with 4,5 tons of hardware (spacesuits, operation, and experiment equipment) to drive through the desert, but these got finally unloaded with a crane into the base camp. 1 Day 1: 1st February 2018
Farewell Ceremony in Muscat patronized by his Highness the Minister of Oil & Gas of Oman. Our Field Commander Grömer talks about AMADEE-18 mission citing Ibn Battuta : “Travelling first makes you speechless & then turns you into a storyteller”. (c) OeWF (Florian Voggeneder)
